Dan and I had been dating for almost a year and had talked about getting married. We had already bought our rings and gotten our marriage license, and were thinking of doing a small ceremony at our lakeside cabin in July.
When I got up to go to school on Monday April 30, I thought that the day would be a typical Monday full of teaching my freshman math classes.
Boy was I wrong!
My (now) husband, Dan, had commented the day before that he had liked the nice skirt/blouse that I had worn to church, and why not wear them to school the next day? That should have been a clue- but I was as clueless as they come…
I have first block off as a planning period, and around 8:30 a.m. headed down toward the office to talk with the Principal about a few issues. As I approached the doors to the office, I noticed that there were chairs in the hallway and that the door was closed. I was wondering what was going on, when one of the secretaries told me I should come into the office.
I stepped into the office and saw Dan standing there in a nice shirt and tie. I asked him “what are you doing here?” and he responded, “I love you, will you marry me?” I whispered, “yes…”
I was then introduced to a notary public who performed our wedding in the main office with two of the secretaries, the assistant principal, and one other teacher there as witnesses.
The second best part of the day (other than getting married, of course)? They had arranged for me to have a substitute and I got to spend my surprise wedding day in Bar Harbor with my new husband.
